Top Things to See in Ragusa Superiore

Follow Rick Steves' tour to see Ragusa Superiore (the upper town). Allow at least 45 minutes for this tour.

Start at the Piazza della Repubblica and the Chiesa delle Anime Sante del Purgatorio. Above the entrance door is an inscription which translates to "Pity Me." Churches like this focused on the dead who might need to be purified of their sins. Purgatory churches are found all over Sicily but not on the mainland.

Palazzo Cosentini, a noble 18th century palace.

Look at the figures supporting the balconies.

Church of Santa Maria dell'Itria built in the early 17th century by the Knights of Malta.

Climb the stairs to reach Ragusa Superiore

Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale

Inside, look for the 1538 terracotta relief of the Dormition of the Virgin.

From the balcony, look back at Ragusa Ibla (the lower town).

Palazzo Bertini

On the building are 3 masks representing the 3 types of power. This one represents the power of Money:

The other 2 masks represent the power of nobility and the power of nothing to lose.
