Pasticceria Maria Grammatico

In the center of Erice, you'll find Pasticceria Maria Grammatico. Maria's bakery is an institution and people come from all over Sicily to have her treats. She learned to bake when she was sent to live with the nuns as a youngster.

When we visited, it was Good Friday and there were pastries in the shape of sheep.

The display cases are full of different almond treats, all selling for €18/kg.

We got one of each to try. They all tasted the same to me--almond, sugar & egg whites as a base. Some had citrus and others had rum. I wasn't a huge fan. This tray of cookies was €7.

These were probably the best of the treats. They were shortbread cookies with chocolate inside.
