Arriving at LIS, we purchased a Viva Viagem card for €0.50 and topped it up with €5. You can use it to pay for rides on the Metro, trolleys, buses, funiculars and elevadors in Lisbon. You can add value to it for 1 year after purchase. After a year, you can use the leftover value but you cannot continue to top up. The card is not shareable--every passenger has to have a card.
A ride is €1.35with a Viva Viagem card (a savings of €0.15 vs paying with cash). It is good for 1 hour of travel within Zone 1. You can also purchase a 24-hour pass for €6.45. You will need to purchase another Viva Viagem card for €0.50. I wasn't sure if you purchased the 24-hour pass first, if you can top it up to use for individual rides.
From LIS, it was easy to take the Metro Vm from Aeroporto to Alameda. We then changed to Vd to Rossio Station. From there, it was a 3-minute walk to our hotel.
