Tower of Hercules

We wanted to see the Tower of Hercules and drove 50 minutes north to A Coruna from Santiago de Compostela. The Tower of Hercules is the world's oldest working lighthouse. It was built in the 1st century AD but was renovated in 1788.

We didn't know there was timed entry so we weren't able to get a ticket to visit the lighthouse itself. You can still wander around the grounds without a ticket.

The grounds have an impressive collection of sculptures.

At the entrance to the Tower of Hercules Sculpture Park, you'll find "Charon," the ferryman of Hades, who carried the soul of the dead across the River Styx.

"Breoghan" a granite sculpture of the founder of the city of A Coruna.

The Tower of Hercules.

"Compass Rose" is a large 8-pointed figure with references to the seven Celtic nations and the Tartessians.

The scallop on the "Compass Rose" represents Galicia.

"Figure of King Charles III," at the foot of the Tower of Hercules, during whose reign the renovation of the Tower was begun.

"The Doors of Hercules" leads to the Tower. The scenes on the door represent the myths and legends of the monument.
