Obidos is an adorable walled town that sits on top of a hill. It's a 1 hr 10 min drive from Lisbon.

There's a large free parking lot near the aqueduct.

Walking towards the Main Gate, you'll find the Croix de la Memoire. It was built in the 15th century to commemorate the victory of Alfonso Henriques against the Moores.

Enter Obidos through the Main Gate.

Inside the gate, you'll find scenes related to the town's history. Scenes like these covered the entire length of the town wall until the 1755 earthquake destroyed them.

ree

Obidos is popular with tourist buses so arrive early or late to avoid the crowds. The upper street leads straight to the castle while the lower street leads to restaurants.

ree

Turn left and climb up on the wall. From here, you can see the 16th century aqueduct.

ree

Continue down the lower street and you'll find the Obidos Chocolate House.

ree

Stop in to see chocolate on display.

The blue and yellow trim on the buildings define property lines.

Church of St. Peter was built in the 13th century.

ree

Next to St. Peter's church is the town hall.

ree

The Portuguese Royal Arms hang on the facade.

ree

St. Mary's Fountain.

ree

Above the Town Square, the Pillory sits on the side of the street. It was the symbol of administrative power.

ree

Turn left out of St. Mary's church to find the Misericordia Church with Our Lady of Mercy sculpted in blue and white ceramics. This was built as part of the Queen's charity institution.

ree

The main street ends at a white church, which was repurposed as a bookstore when Obidos was named "City of Literature" in 2015.

ree

ree

Facing the bookstore, turn right and find the castle, which is now a Pousada with 9 rooms. You can wander around the outside.

ree

After visiting the castle, head back to the Main Gate by walking along the top of the town wall.

ree

It took us about 1.5 hours to explore the town.
