From Burgos, it was a 30-minute drive to Lerma, a small village with a population of 2500. It was occupied by the Moors until the 10th century, when it was reconquered by the Counts of Castile. It came into prominence in the 17th century, when Francisco Gomez de Sandoval y Rojas, the 3rd Duke of Lerma and the first Great Duke, served as the royal adviser to Philip III. Lerma has been known as a ducal town since then.
