Guimaraes is known as the "Birthplace of Portugal" because it is believed that Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal was born here and the Battle of São Mamede, considered to be the seminal event for the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal, was fought nearby. Guimaraes has a medieval centre and is also a university town.

Igreja e Oratórios de Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos is on the southeast end of the Jardim. Construction began in 1769.

In Largo da Oliveira, Padrao do Salado is a Gothic monument with 4 arches and a cross that commemorates the Battle of Salado. It was erected in 1342.
Church of Nostre Senora de Oliveira is a convent church founded by Countess Mumadona in the 12th century. It sits behind the monument.
The Old Town Hall sits in Largo da Oliveira.

Statue of Afonso Henriques
Paco dos Duques de Braganca (Ducal Palace) was first built in 1401 and later restored as a presidential residence for Salazar. Admission is €5.
Igreja de Sao Miguel Do Castelo is a modest medieval church.
The inside is plain and it's reported that under the floor of this church lie buried the great warriors of the nation’s founding period.
The Castelo was built in the 11th century and has 7 towers. It is thought to be the birthplace of Afonso Henriques.
