Top Things to Do in Vigo

Vigo is a port town with the largest fishing fleet in Europe and the 2nd largest fleet in the world (2nd to Tokyo). Seafood, therefore, plays a huge part in its economy.

Here are the top things to do in Vigo:

1. Eat Seafood

2. See the town's sculptures

3. Visit Porta do Sol and El Sireno (The Merman). The Puerto do Sol was under renovation when we visited so it was hard to get close to the Merman. The statue of the half man/half fish sits on a very tall pedestal. It was installed in 1991 and has become the symbol of modern Vigo.

4. Climb to the Castello do Castro

5. See the Concatedral de Santa Maria in the historic quarter or Cidade Vella. It's a Neoclassical church built on the remains of a Gothic church that was burned down by Francis Drake.

6. Buy oysters on Rua Pescaderia. In the mornings, oyster vendors set up on these stone benches and sell shucked oysters. Take them to a local restaurant to enjoy them with a glass of white wine.

7. Take a boat to Islas Cies
