Top Sights in Amarante

Our next stop was Amarante, a 45-minute drive from Guimaraes. We parked in the free lot to the right of the Igreja de Sao Goncalo de Amarante. It's near the Municipal Market and the Amarante sign. It took less than an hour to see the town.

A Teixeira de Pascoaes, a Portuguese poet born in Amarante in 1877. He studied at the University of Coimbra.

Ponte de Sao Goncalo, a medieval bridge that crosses the Rio Tamega. The original bridge, which was built in the 13th century, collapsed in a flood in 1763 and was rebuilt in 1790.

The Mosteiro de Sao Goncalo sits near the bridge. You can visit the cloisters. No admission fee.

Statue of St. James

Marble pulpit.

Visit St. Gonçalo's tomb in a side chapel. He is Portugal's St. Valentine, to whom prayers may be offered for fertility or help in finding a husband. Rub his coffin to have your wish come true.

Praca da Republica is nearby.

A fishmonger drives around in his truck selling fish. He even parks his truck across the street from a fish store.

The riverbank.
