Sights in Santander

Santander is the capital of Cantabria. It's a modern city with a population of 170,000. If you're short on time, it's skippable..


Catedral de Santander--€1 donation to enter. It was built between the 12th and 14th century, damaged in a fire in 1941 and rebuilt in its original Gothic style.


The altarpiece is Baroque.


The catedral is minimalist with simple stained glass.


The attached cloisters can be visited as well.




After visiting the Catedral, walk down C. Calvo Sotelo., You'll find the Monument to Pedro Velarde in Plaza Alfonzo XIII. Pedro Velarde y Santillán was a Spanish artillery captain famous for his heroic death in the Dos de Mayo uprisings against the French occupation of Madrid.


Further down, "A Pereda" is a statue dedicated to José María de Pereda, a modern Spanish novelist, who died in Santander in 1906. The base of the monument represents 5 of his most popular novels.


The Centro Botin, on the bay, is a modern arts and culture complex. There are a few rotating art exhibitions and cafes.


"Monumento al Incendio de Santander de 1941" by Jose Cobo Calderon has 2 parts. "The figures are isolated, yet sharing a space, a restlessness that becomes a reason for communication."


The nearby great block of white marble represents "rebirth, reconstruction, the flame of life."
