Rembrandtplein to the Red Light District

After dinner, we walked near Rembrandtplein then headed to the Red Light District to follow Rick Steves' 1-hour tour.


Rembrandtplein is one of the city's premier nightlife spots. There are several late-night dance clubs in the area.


The Tuschinski Theater is a half-block down from Rembrandtplein. It is a movie theater from the 1920s. The exterior is Art Deco and Art Nouveau. You can watch first-run movies here. It's not cheap--seats range from €18-22.

Start the Red Light District Walk at Dam Square and walk down Warmoestraat. Find the condom shop.

The Old Church is Amsterdam's most historic church. This was the medieval city's original church. Rembrandt's wife is buried here. Sailors arriving home would stop here to give thanks to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers, Christmas and the city of Amsterdam. You can pay to climb to the top of the 290-foot tower.

Near the church is Belle--a statue dedicated to the Unknown Prostitute.

Nearby, on the ground, is a bronze breast.

Along the canals, you'll find public urinals.

The red lights over doors indicate a female sex worker while blue lights indicate a trans woman sex worker.

The Prinses Juliana daycare is located in the Red Light District. It was built in the 1970s to mix all dimensions of society together.

Amstelkring Museum (Our Lord in the Attic Church). In the attic inside this townhouse, there is an elaborately decorated place of Catholic worship.

The Cannabis College is a free non-profit study center that explains the pros and cons of cannabis. It contains the Cannabis Garden, which has a display of cannabis plants.

At the end of the tour, walk out to Dam Square. You'll pass a Sculpture of Two Faces.
