Rei dos Leitoes, Malheada

Our hostess at the Guest House Santa Clara told us about the best leitoes (roasted suckling pig) in Portugal. It was in Malheada on our way to Porto. We decided to stop and see for ourselves. There are many restaurants in Malheada serving leitoes. We chose Rei dos Leitoes. How can you go wrong when it's "king of leitoes?" It's located at Av da Restauracao, 17.

The restaurant had won several Michelin mentions.

The interior was formal but casual dress was fine for lunch. We didn't have reservations but arrived when it opened at noon and was able to get a table.

Pao--€0.90 each and olives--€2. The bread was really good and chewy.

Sopa da Dia--€3. It was creamed squash. Tasty but needed salt.

Leitoa--€22. It was stringy and not as tender as what we had in Segovia, Spain where you could cut the pig with a plate. The skin was crispy though. It was served with salad & homemade potato chips.

Malheada was worth a stop since we were passing through but I wouldn't go out of my way to have the leitoes. Go to Segovia instead.
