Pasteis de Belem

Pasteis de Belem is the birthplace of pastel (pasteis if plural) de nata, a custard tart famous in Portugal. The cafe has been open since 1837 and there is usually a long line. The long line is for takeaway and if you go to the left of the line, there is usually a shorter line for dine-in service.

The cafe is huge with several rooms.

You can wander around inside and watch where the tarts are made.

Pastel de nata (on the left)--€1.20. Bolo Arroz--€1.30. Sumol--€1.70. The pastel de nata had chunks in the custard and was disappointing. The tart shell was thin and had a nice crunch though. The bolo arroz tasted like a corn muffin. It was dry. I recommend sticking with the pastel de nata. The Sumol is a pineapple drink. It was sweet and needed more cabonation.
