Megalithic Sites

Between Lisbon & Evora, you'll find several megalithic sites. We visited a couple on the way back to Lisbon.

Anta Grande do Zambujeiro is located southwest of Evora, about a 20-minute drive. You'll drive down a dirt road to a parking lot. From the parking lot, it's a short walk along a path. This megalithic dolmen, a burial chamber, dates from 4000-3000 BC and was discovered in 1964. There is no admission fee.

The entrance to the dolmen is boarded up.

Walk up behind the dolmen and you can view the interior of the dolmen by looking down into it. When it was discovered, it contained weapons, ceramics, gold & ivory jewelry, as well as 30 male skeletons. Some of these are on display at the Museum of Evora.

Continue further west to the Cromeleque dos Almendres. It is Portugal's Stonehenge and dates from 5500 BC, 2000 years older than Stonehenge. There are 95 rounded stones erected in the shape of an oval.

Some of the stones have worn-out carvings. Use your imagination to make out what the images represent.

Leaving the megaliths, we spied storks in nests. This one had 2 babies. So adorable!
