Kehl, Germany is a town of 35,000. It sits across the Rhine from Strasbourg, France. After we returned from our tour of Strasbourg, we toured the small town center.
Near the ship's dock is the Villa Schmidt. The house, built on the remains of the Kehl Fortress, was owned by Alice Schmidt Trick, whose family owned the Trick Pulp Factory. She and her husband lived here until 1944. It then became the French Military Administrative Headquarters until 1992, when the city of Kehl took possession and renovated it. It is now a protected monument and restaurant.
In front of the Villa is a statue of die Heuwederin (the Haymaker). The original bronze statue was lost in WWII. This statue was made from the original plaster cast.
Friedenkirsche in the town square.
Memorial commemorating the Franco-Prussian War and Mother Kinzig.
Rosengarten-Stadt Park, a lovely park near the town center.
Through the trees, a statue memorializing the Baden Pioneers of Battalion 14.
St. Nepomuk Church
Park next to the Rhine, on the way back to the ship.
