Jordaan Walk

The last of Rick Steves' tours is the 90-minute Jordaan Walk. You'll need to put up with some cheesy banter. Start at Dam Square. Between the Royal Palace and the New Church is a street leading to the brick Magna Plaza Shopping Center. It was built in 1889.

#5 Molsteeg is a typical one-window-wide merchant's house with shop on the bottom, living space in the middle and storage in the attic.

Big Head Square on Torensluis Bridge. The Big Head sculpture is Multatuli, a Dutch writer. He was the first author to criticize Dutch colonial practices.

Buildings settle, causing them to lean.

You'll pass many canals on this walk.

The Lutheran Church is the domed building.

The Grey Area Coffee Shop is a cannabis shop.

The green & white decal identifies the Grey Area as a Coffee Shop that is allowed to sell cannabis.

Notice the different gables on the buildings. This is a Neck gable.

Bell gable.

Arched bridge over Liliegracht.

The Homo Monomunet commemorates all gay & lesbians who have been persecuted because of their sexual orientation.

Nearby, Pink Point is a kiosk that gives information on gay and lesbian Amsterdam.

Beyond Pink Point is a kiosk selling French Fries. It has artwork with french fries added to famous masterpieces.

Westerkerk (Western Church) is where Rembrandt is buried although no one knows exactly where he's buried.

The carillon chimes every 15 minutes, This reminded Anne Frank who hid in the Secret Annex nearby that there was an outside world.

The spire's crown shape was a gift of the Hapsburg emperor Maximillian I.

A statue of Anne Frank sits in front of the church.

Entrance to the Anne Frank House.

Prinsengracht Canal just outside of Anne Frank's House.

Some of Amsterdam's canals are narrow.

Charging stations for electric cars.

Stickers on mailboxes indicate if junk mail is okay or not.

This mailbox allows some junk mail but not others.

Amsterdam is a bicycle town. There are just as many bikes as residents and bikes outnumber cars.

Residents are allowed a front yard garden as long as it's no more than 1-sidewalk tile wide.

Another view of the Westerkerk.

St. Andrew's Hof is easy to miss at #107. Push on the door.

You'll find a tiny courtyard with subsidized residences funded by churches, charities and the city for low-income widows and pensioners.
