El Capricho de Gaudi

Antoni Gaudi is perhaps the most well known Spanish architect. Most of his work is in Catalonia, but he does have a few buildings in other areas.

In Comillas, a 2-hour drive east of Oviedo, you'll find one of his works, El Capricho. Admission is €7 and is timed but it wasn't too difficult to get a last-minute ticket.

It's a fanciful house built as a summer home for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, brother-in-law of the Marquis de Comillas, in the 1880s. Unfortunately, he died before the house was completed.

The house has Moorish influences including a minaret. One addition to the tower would cause sounds to occur when opening certain windows.

It's a self-guided walk through the house. Start in the solarium.

Admire the grounds surrounding the house as you go in and out of each room.

There's a seated statue of Gaudi, admiring his work.

The overwhelming theme is sunflowers.

Ironwork is plentiful around the house.

As are stained glass.

In general, the rooms are fairly small.

Intricate furniture are scattered throughout the house.

`I liked the exposed beams in some of the rooms.

When you reach the spiral staircase, you've reached the end of the tour. Allow 1 hour to tour the house.
