The next morning, we entered Zion before sunrise to avoid the line at the entrance. We weren't the only ones with the idea.
We decided to hike the Devils Garden Trail and drove north all the way to the end of the road. There is a parking lot and toilets are available.
Trail Details:
Difficult
Distance: 4.7 mile
Elevation gain: 721 feet
Time: 3 1/2 hrs
Loop: no, unless you do the Primitive Trail beyond the Double O Arch
Description: The trail includes Tunnel Arch, Pine Tree Arch, Landscape Arch, Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, Double O Arch and the Dark Angel. It continues to Private Arch on the Primitive Trail which forms a loop. Alternatively, you can go back after visiting Dark Angel. The trail beyond Landscape Arch is not recommended if you have a fear of heights. The narrow ledges with steep drop-offs scared us off and we did not go to the Private Arch.
The trail starts off flat.
Veer off to see Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch.
Tunnel Arch is the dark hole on the left.
The Pine Tree Arch is next to the pine tree.
Pine Tree Arch
The trail continues on a flat path to the Landscape Arch.
The Landscape Arch is 290 feet long and believed to be North America's longest.
Beyond Landscape Arch, the trail becomes more difficult.
Veer off to see Partition Arch.
Partition Arch.
The next arch is Navajo Arch.
Entrance to Navajo Arch
Navajo Arch is deep with a sand base and you can walk inside.
After Navajo Arch, you'll cross a fin. This is scary, especially if you have a fear of heights.
The Black Arch Overlook
Look in the distance to see the black hole
Beyond that is the Double O Arch.
Continue on the trail to the Dark Angel.
The Dark Angel
I thought this formation looked like a head--I couldn't find any formal reference to it.
