Dead Horse Point State Park

Dead Horse Point State Park is located 12 miles and 16 minutes from Canyonlands. Entry fee is $20 per vehicle, valid for 2 days and the America the Beautiful pass is not valid.

Campsites within the park cost $50 from March through October, $40 the rest of the year. The campsite fee includes park entry fee. Campsites have paved driveway, picnic table, fire ring, tent pad, 20/30/50 amp electrical service and access to a dump station. There is no water. Reservations are a must but you sometimes can get a spot if there is a last-minute cancellation.

You can also rent a yurt from $120-140/night (includes park entry fee & taxes). There is heating/air conditioning. Bedding is not provided and bathrooms are nearby.

The point was once used as a corral for wild mustangs. Cowboys would round up these horses, choose the horses they wanted and leave the rest corralled on the waterless point, where they died.

We arrived right before sunrise and headed straight to Dead Horse Point Overlook. There was a big group of photographers with impressive telephoto lenses.

Watch the sun bathe the rocks as it rises.
