Day 3--Vila do Conde to Apulia

Day 3 took us from Vila do Conde—Povoa de Varzim—Agucadoura—Praia de Estela—Apulia, 17.8 km (10.7 mi), 4:27, flat. It was an easy day except for some light rain.

Povoa de Varzim was 3.7km and 40 minutes north of Vila do Conde. It's a resort town but there's plenty to see in town. The Nossa Senhora da Lapa is right on the Camino. It was built in 1772 by the local fishermen community. It includes a lighthouse.

The church was closed when we visited so we didn't get to see the inside.

Fabrica de Conservas A Poveira is a cannery. We weren't sure if this site was still operational. Portugal is known for their canned fish. It's a premier product, nothing like our canned fish. In front of the cannery is the Monument to Saint Peter, represented as a fisherman in a boat.

Walking along the Avenue of Discoveries, we came upon this Monument a Peixera, dedicated to the women fishermen of Povoa de Varzim.

Painel de Azulejos is located at the traffic circle as you come into town. The history of Povoa de Varzim is depicted in azulejo tiles.

Along the waterfront, you'll find a bronze violinist. Cross the street to reach the TI for a stamp.

The Casino in Povoa de Varzim was built in the 1930s.

Built in 1929, the Estadio do Varzim is a multi-use stadium holding 7000 spectators. It is mainly used for football matches and is home to the Varzim Sport Clube.

The day's walk was pleasant, taking us through towns and along the boardwalk on the beach.

A Camino Memorial, where you can leave a momento.

Many pilgrims bring a rock representing their worries and leave it behind.

A little over an hour north of Povoa de Varzim, we found this stone windmill on the beach.

We stopped at Paimo on the beach just south of Agucadoura for a drink. Capuccinno, hot chocolate and orange juice were €2 each.

It started to rain lightly at this point and we pulled out our ponchos. It was 1.5 hours to the CMB Guesthouse in Apulia, our stop for the night. The rain wasn't too bothersome. At least we used our rain gear and I could officially say we used everything we brought on the trip.
