Cedar City

Cedar City is located between Kolob Canyon and Cedar Breaks National Monument. With a population of 33,000, it is the largest city in Iron County. We stopped to see the historic downtown.

Jolley's Building, once the Cedars Hotel, is the oldest building on Main Street.

The Old Post Office is just down the block. Today, it serves as city offices and the police station.

Just outside of the Old Post Office is a statue of Henry Lunt, Cedar City's founder.

Cedar City is the home of Southern Utah University.

Throughout the downtown area, you'll find decorated sheep gracing many buildings.

The Cedar Theatre is up for lease.

More decorated sheep.

The Wells Fargo building was the old Bank of Southern Utah. The Bank of Southern Utah was forced to close on Christmas Eve 1931 during the Great Depression. The citizens of Cedar Break raised $90,000 and the bank was able to reopen on May 4, 1932.

Richard Harrison was one of Cedar City's first settlers and the superintendent at Iron Works. His statue is located in front of the Wells Fargo Bank.

The Cedar Sheep Association Co-op was established in 1881. The upstairs was occupied by doctors and became Cedar City's first hospital. In the 1960s, it was converted to a drug store & soda fountain, which still functions today.

Francis Webster stands outside. He was a leader in the sheep industry and one of the first to ship sheep and wool to Chicago. He was instrumental in the construction of the first building on what is now Southern Utah University.

The Union Pacific Railroad Depot is located at the north end of town. Because of the railroad, Cedar City became America's "Gateway to the National Parks." The depot is now home to a Chinese restaurant, bakery and gift shops.

Across the street is a statue of Helen Foster Snow, known as the heroine of China. She played an important role in rallying the Chinese to oppose the occupation of the country by the Japanese in the 1930s. She also helped organize support for the Chinese cause in the capitals of the Western World.

The Cedar City Old Rock Church replaced the Tabernacle as the new place to worship for the LDS community.

Located on North 100 East, this monument marks the site where iron was first manufactured west of the Mississippi.

The Cedar City Public Library is home to the Paiute Monument.

The Paiute Monument features several boulders with petroglyphs telling the story of the Paiute Indians.

Cedar Breaks also has a Walmart, located outside the downtown area, in case you need any last minute items.
