Cocido Maragato is known in this area and one of the best is served at Casa Coscolo in Castrillo de los Polvazares. It's a 12-minute drive from Astorga.
Park your car on the main road and walk a few minutes to the restaurant. Be sure to make reservations. We saw many people turned away, even though this was a sleepy one-road town.
We started with a glass of Lulu, a semisweet white wine recommended by the staff--€2.50. This was nice and enjoyable to start.
Next came a glass of Manium, a Mencia from Bierzo--€3. This went well with all the meat that was to come.
Amuse Bouche of house cured meat.
We ordered the only thing on the menu--the Cocido Maragato--€22. First, you got a plate of salad..
Then, a pig tureen was brought to the table.
Inside, there was morcillo de buey (ox blood sausage), costilla (ribs), chorizo, morcilla curada (cured blood sausage), tocino (pork belly), careta (pig ears), pata (pig knuckle), albóndiga de gallina y relleno (chicken meatballs). Each of the meats were tender and so flavorful.
The next course was garbanzo beans, cabbage and potatoes.
A pig/chicken tureen was brought after that.
This was fideos (thin noodles) in the most concentrated chicken broth. This was the perfect ending to the cocido meal.
Dessert was also included. Natillas Caseras--a light custard.
We left stuffed. Four people could easily have shared what we ordered for 2 people. If you liked what you ate, you could order a kit to take home.
