Upper Barrakka Gardens

From the Lower Barrakka Gardens, continue along the waterfront until you reach the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The gardens were created in the 16th century and are free to enter.

The arched terrace in the garden used to have a roof. The ceiling was removed following the Rising of the Priests in 1775.

There are numerous sculptures, statues and monuments in the garden. "Les Gavroches" ("Street Urchins") is one of my favorites.

Look at the expression on their faces.

There is a Memorial to Albert Einstein. I couldn't figure out his connection to Malta.

The Saluting Battery is located in the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Cannons once fired salutes to visiting naval ships. Today, it's fired daily at noon and 4 pm. Pay €3 to enter and get a tour.

You can pay to stand on the Saluting Battery or stay on the balcony to get a bird's-eye view of the firing. On the way out of the Gardens, give a donation.

There is an elevator between the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Lascaris Ditch. a short walk to ferries and water taxis. It can carry 21 passengers. Pay on the way up--€1 but not on the way down. If you have a ferry ticket, it's free.
