The Matheson, Healdsburg

The Matheson, an upscale farm-to-table restaurant, is located at 106 Matheson Street in Healdsburg.

They offered a 3-course dinner for $55 for Restaurant Week. It was a huge disappointment.

We ordered the Milk Bread & Butter--$7. This was such a small portion. It was tasty but not worth $7.

One of the options for the first course was Burrata Cheese with asian pear, beets, pistachio, sourdough. It turned out to be half a burrata with 3 leaves of radicchio and slices of citrus. Not sure what the mound was on the burrata. The flavors were not memorable yet this was the best dish of the meal

The other option for the first course was Celeriac & Chestnut Soup with duck carnitas, mole negro, spiced pumpkin seeds. My husband liked this.He likes the creaminess of the soup.

The Steelhead Trout had been substituted with Pumpkin Curry so we all chose the Prime Beef Bavette with potato pave, umami hollandaise, chili crunch, romanesco. The Waygu Bavette steak was ridiculously chewy and my jaw was tired by the end of the dish. I tried cutting it against the grain which meant lengthwise on a 1-inch portion and it didn't help. The vegetables had a really spicy chili crunch and fermented black beans were added so it had a strange flavor that didn't match the dish. The best part of the plate was the potato pave--layered mandolined potatoes, even though mine had been overcrisped on the outside.

One of the options for dessert was Chocolate Pot de Creme with cinnamon crumble, caramel, chiffon cake. There was no chiffon cake. Instead there was a tablespoon of homemade Cracker Jack on top. The pot de creme was thin, more like a watery custard.

On a previous visit, we ordered off the menu and the dinner was much better. Heirloom tomatoes--$18. Brokaw avocado, sesame, nori tapenade, shiso. The tomatoes were ripe and flavorful and all the ingredients worked well together. Not a large serving for $18 and no, I did not eat half of it before taking a picture.

Halibut--$43. Pole beans, apricot, red curry, Monterey squid.. Very well prepared. I liked the lime cream, nice and tangy.

Aged Sonoma Duck--$38. Brassicas, stone fruit, peanut, basil. Very well prepared although the confit piece was a tad salty.

Volo S'more Bars--chocolate ganache, shortbread, marshmallow fluff, graham cracker crisp. Thick chocolate over chocolate shortbread. Graham cracker crisp was very thin.

The Matheson has a wall of wines. You can purchase a taste or a glass.
