Tarxien Temple

The next day, we visited ancient sites near Valletta. The Tarxien Temple is located in Paola, 6 km from the historical center of Valletta and our hotel. We took a bus to reach it.

It was a 7-minute walk from our hotel to the bus terminal. Bus 82 left from bay A7. A ticket costs €1.50 and is good for travel within 2 hours. You can buy the ticket onboard. It's good to have exact change but if you don't, the bus driver can make change.

The Tarxien Prehistoric Temples are 5000 years old and one of the oldest surviving structures in the world. They were excavated in 1914.

Admission is €6. You can download an App, which offers a tour of the temple, but it didn't work that well. The same information can be found on placards at each site. Don't waste your time downloading the App.

The temple is outdoors but is covered by a tent. There is a one-way walkway and it takes about 45 minutes to tour the sites. The temple has 5 semicircular chambers.

It's surprising that there are intact structures after 5000 years.

The temple even had a toilet.

Geometric designs are visible

along with figurines. This is a copy--the original is in the National Museum of Archaeology.

Near the ticket booth, you can see a faint outline of a boat. Ask the ticket guy to point it out.
