Sliema is home to Malta's upper class and is more modern, with high-end shopping. It is separated from Valletta by the Marsamxett Harbour. There are several sights to visit.
On Manoel Island, joined to Sliema by a short bridge from Gzira, you'll find Fort Manoel. The fort was built in the early 18th century and was bombed extensively during WWII. The fort is temporarily closed.
The Gzira Parish Church, also known as the Parish Church of our Lady of Mount Carmel.
We passed a bakery and it had "ancovy pie." We assumed it was a misspelling but it did intrigue us.
It was like a calzone filled with onions and anchovies. Pretty tasty.
Tigne Point is at the tip of Sliema and home to the Point Mall--Malta's largest shopping complex.
Fort Tigne is a polygonal fort built by the Order of St. John between 1793-1795. It was in military use until 1979.
View of Valletta from Point Tigne.
Although we had a great room with a beautiful harbour view in Sliema, I still prefer the quaintness of the Old Town of Valletta.
