Mdina

Getting from Marsaxlokk to Mdina by bus was not easy. We took Bus 81 to Bomba 2, crossed via underground to Bomba 1 and caught Bus 52 to Rabat. Since you have to make a connection and the ride is around an hour, it's cheaper to purchase a 2-hour ticket for €1.50 rather than use the 15-ride pass. From the bus stop in Rabat, we followed the signs and walked 200m to the Main Gate.

Mdina, known as the Silent City, is in the center of Malta. It was founded by the Phoenicians in 1000 BC, conquered by the Moors then razed in the 17th century by an earthquake. It's a walled city protected by a moat in times past.

Before entering the Main Gate, look to the right and see the old gate, which has been bricked over.

After entering the Main Gate, turn to the right to find the TI. You can pick up a map of Mdina and watch a video on movies that have been filmed in Mdina.

A little further down is the Cathedral Museum.

Nearby is St. Paul's Cathedral, which was built in the 17th-18th century.

The Baroque interior is beautiful.

Mdina sits on a hilltop and there are beautiful views of the valley.

Wander the small alleys found all over town.

The Greek Gate is found in the southwest corner of Mdina. It was the only gate that slaves could use in the past.
