Marsaxlokk

The next day was Sunday and we headed to Marsaxlokk, founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century. The Turkish fleet was moored here during the Great Siege of 1565 and Napoleon's army landed here during the French invasion of 1798. In 1989, Gorbachev and Bush senior met on a warship anchored in the bay.

It is home to Malta's largest fishing fleet. Head to Marsaxlokk for the Sunday fish market. We took Bus TD10 for the 17-minute ride to Marsaxlokk.

On the day of our visit, it was raining. I, along with the locals, was surprised at how high the water rose.

The market wasn't as lively so there wasn't much to see.

Bronze statue of father returning from fishing who is met by his son.

Near the waterfront was the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pompeii. We stopped in to get out of the rain.

Near the church is a statue of St. Andrew, patron saint of fishermen.
