La Gare

It's Sonoma County Restaurant Week--one of my favorite times to be in Sonoma County. This year, there were 83 restaurants participating.

We started with La Gare, located at 208 Wilson Street in Santa Rosa. There is dining available outside, under a canopy. Heaters provided enough warmth. They offer free corkage on Monday nights.

For Restaurant Week, there was a $35 four-course dinner.

The Soup du Jour was Potato Leek. This was disappointing. There wasn't much leek flavor, mainly a potato soup in chicken broth.

The 2nd course was Caesar salad. This had good flavor but the lettuce was limp.

One of the options for the main was Fresh Wild King Salmon in Beurre Blanc Sauce with Rice and Vegetables. The salmon didn't have the red color I expect from a wild salmon but it was well prepared and not dry. The vegetables were overcooked though.

The other option was Filet Mignon with Wild Mushroom Sauce. It was served with potatoes and vegetables. The filet was actually a sirloin filet and it was tough to cut. The server asked if medium rare was okay. One person in our party asked for it to be prepared rare but all the steaks arrived medium rare.

One dessert option was Black Forest Cake. The cherries part was actually a mousse layer. Overall, the cake was well presented with a dollop of cream and a chocolate garnish but the cake was just okay.

The other option for dessert was Key Lime Pie. It was the smallest sliver possible and a bright green color. The flavor was good though and I preferred this over the cake.

Free corkage on Mondays was not honored during Restaurant Week. Corkage was $20.
