Chinatown Complex

The Chinatown Complex is one of the largest hawker centers in Singapore. There are over 260 stalls divided into colored areas. There are many Michelin Bib Gourmands in the center. You can easily get lost trying to find them. Know the stall number to make it easier to find.

We visited at 4:30pm. We had wanted to try Hawker Chan's soy sauce chicken but he had just closed. They lost their Michelin star so I wanted to try it to see why they lost their star. On our previous trip, their soy sauce chicken was really good.

There was a huge line at Zhong Guo La Mian so we got in line.

XLB (xiao long bao or soup dumpling)--10 dumplings for SGD7 ($5)--5 per basket so you get 2 baskets. The skin was thin and the filling was juicy but it was a tad sweet for my taste.

Next door was a juice place. While my husband waited in the XLB line, I ordered the watermelon juice. 2 large slices of watermelon with just the skin cut off (still had green rind), blended with sugar water and ice. Tasty. SGD2 ($1.45 for a large).

Zhao Ji Claypot Rice.

I ordered the smallest claypot for SGD11 ($8). There was seafood, chicken and green vegetables. It took about 30 minutes to prepare. When the pot arrived, we immediately added the thick soy sauce and oil and stirred it up. It was good but needed some spice. Once we added the spice, it was good.

Pang's Satay

Tiny area where the satays were grilled.

Chicken, pork & mutton satay for SGD0.60 ($0.44) each. You had to order a minimum of 10 total. It was a 30-minute wait. The peanut dipping sauce was good but the satays were nothing special.

I was in search of Lian He Ben ji Claypot Rice but I couldn't find it until we were ready to leave. It's stall #02-198 in the green section on the outer edge) for future reference.
