Canberra Sights

After lunch, we took a tour of Canberra. We left the car at the hotel and used the light rail system, which was easy and convenient to use. An all-day pass cost A$8.60 ($5.50).

We started at the Visitors' Center situated on Lake Burley Griffin, an artificial lake created in 1963 after the Molonglo River, which ran between the city centre and Parliamentary Triangle, was dammed. From the Visitors' Center, you can see Captain Cook's Memorial Jet, which was constructed by the Commonwealth Government to commemorate the Bicentenary of Captain James Cook's first sighting of the east coast of Australia. It shoots water daily from 11am-2pm.

Looking to the left of the lake from the Visitors' Center, you can see the National Carillon, housing 57 bells. It was a gift from the British Government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the capital.

We walked across the bridge to the other side of Lake Burley Griffin to see the National Library of Australia. It was free to visit. We stopped into the Treasures Gallery to see Captain Cooke's Endeavour journal.
