Durango, with a population of 650,000, is the capital of the state of Durango, Mexico. It has a colonial historic center that is an easy walk from the Hotel Gobernador..
The Plaza del Arzobispado houses the Cine el Nuevo Durango, a movie theatre in a beautiful building.
Arquidiocesis de Durango (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Durango) is in the Plaza del Arzobispado as well.
Further down the street is the Catedral Basilica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepcion.
Inside, you'll find a statue of St. James with his shell
and a statue of St. George slaying a dragon.
Across the street is the Plaza de Armas. The police patrol the area on bicycles.
The Plaza de Armas has a bandstand
as well as beautiful fountains.
Colonial buildings surround the Plaza de Armas. This one belongs to BBVA, a Spanish multinational financial services company.
Trolleys can take you on a tour of the historic center but it's easy enough to walk.

Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango sits just next door.
Plaza Fundadores
Palacio de Zambrano is a mansion dating from the end of the 18th century. It currently houses the Francisco Villa de Durango, a museum dedicated to the revolutionary hero Pancho Villa.
Plaza IV Centenario
Statue of Dolores Del Rio, a Mexican actress who was born in Durango, is on Hidalgo.
Templo de San Agustin is nearby, on Ave. 20 de Noviembre.
Paseo Telerifico is a gondola ride that takes you from a small hill in the center of Durango to a viewpoint 680 meters away, Cerro de los Remedios. The ride costs MX$60 ($3) roundtrip.

Back at the Telerifico station in town, you'll find a modern glass building.
Walk around to the back to see a metal sculpture with the highlights of the town of Durango.
Durango Walk of Fame on Calle Constitucion features stars and sculptures of actors who starred in films shot in Durango.
A highlight of Durango is the Tunel de Mineria. It is a museum devoted to the history of mining in Durango. The entrance is via an elevator near the Plaza de Armas bandstand and admission is MX$40 ($2). You'll walk through a tunnel and emerge at the Plaza del Arzobispado.
Beware of scorprions.
If you have time, you can take a free shuttle to the Paseo del Viejo Oeste. This film set is located 12 km north of town and you can walk through the theme park and watch a mock shootout. I'm not sure of the admission cost.
