Sidewinder Canyon

One of my favorite hikes in Death Valley is Sidewinder Canyon. There are 3 slot canyons to explore and the 3rd is very impressive. The trailhead is 31.4 miles south of Furnace Creek on Badwater Road. Ask for an information sheet on the trail at the Visitor's Center in Furnace Creek.

Sidewinder Canyon Details:

Out & back

Distance: 5 mi

Elevation: 800 feet

Time: 2 hours

Ease: easy-moderate (moderate if you climb deep into the slot canyons)

Parking: park on paved road or drive on a short dirt road leading to a gravel pit, where you can also park.

The start of the trail is wide.

It's easy to miss the entrance to the slot canyons. Where the main canyon narrows abruptly is the entrance to the first slot.

We didn't find slot #2 but here's the entrance to slot #3.

It's quite narrow in spots.

Scorpion on the trail.
