The Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway is an 84-mile loop through grassy plains and pine forests passing through Ruidoso, Lincoln and Hondo.
Stop at the Visitors Center to get travel information. Unfortunately, if you're coming from the east, you'll reach the turnoff for Lincoln before the Visitors Center.
Right next door is the Hubbard Museum of the American West, which displays artifacts of the Old West, including wagons and Native American art. Admission is $7.
There is an outdoor park with sculptures of the different horse breeds.
